Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President is a 2011 nonfiction book by Candice Millard about the life, assassination, and legacy of U.S. President James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The book details Garfield's rise from poverty, his political battles, his shooting by a disgruntled office-seeker named Charles Guiteau, and the subsequent medical malpractice that led to his death, highlighting the role of Alexander Graham Bell in the story. It won the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime in 2012 and has been adapted into the Netflix series Death by Lightning.
